My neighbor, her husband and mother are in Yangon visiting family. She hasn’t posted anything on FB yet. It’s very sad. She posted this picture a couple of days ago. They are celebrating Sayadaw’s 100th birthday. May all recover and be safe.
Sadhu to that. Injuries from falling masonry can be severe. Medical care will be slow arriving. It was difficult even before the devastation and now infrastructure is badly damaged. The suffering is unimaginable.
Projected death numbers are sobering. Estimates suggest 2/3 chance of less than 100,000 leaving 1/3 chance of over 100,000 deaths. With the state of Myanmar the true numbers are unlikely to be documented.
Rescue teams in Myanmar are engaged in a desperate search for over 100 monks trapped beneath the ruins of a collapsed building within the Mahamuni Pagoda in Mandalay, following the devastating earthquake.
The Irrawaddy News reported on March 29th, 2025, that the situation remains critical.
On March 28th, more than 270 monks were gathered within the temple complex, undertaking Pali examinations, when the powerful tremors struck.
The resulting collapse of the building has tragically claimed the lives of 80 monks, with over 100 still feared to be buried beneath the debris.
Yes, it will be devastating. The earthquake we had here in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2011 had much lighter casualties (185 dead, several thousand injured of a population of about 400,000). Even so, the hospitals and clinics were overwhelmed and and many people only survived because they were flown to other cities. Sadly, facilities in Mandalay in particular will be totally overwhelmed and help will be slow.
For those looking to help, the Better Burma Charity is now fundraising for both immediate disaster relief and longer-term community investment in Myanmar.
