Important Notice: Site Closing April 1, 2026
After many years of service, this website will be permanently closed on April 1, 2026 due to outdated technology that can no longer be reliably maintained.
The teachings and texts available here remain widely accessible. We encourage you to continue your study at:
I’m not at all proficient with tech stuff, so I couldn’t say why, but there are some searches I run here on SC and get no hits, but then head over to ATI and find what I’m looking for. So, that’s going to hurt.
Plus, they have a lot of great stuff published by a diverse range of authors gathered together in one place. That won’t be as easy to find online.
I still remember when they announced that they would stop uploading new translations.
ATI has a lot more than that. There are many essays by a variety of people. There are also a number of alternative translations of suttas and some translations of commentaries. Most of those can probably be found somewhere else, but it will be more difficult to locate them.
Wow, the end of an era. I recall the days before HTML. The BPS Wheel series were initially input as plain text files and uploaded to FTP and BBS servers. I recall converting one of the plain text booklets about the eightfold path to HTML and sending it to John Bullitt back when the web first took off. That must have been 1995 or 1996? America OnLine was the internet back then, alongside the university services, BBS servers, and newsgroups.
What a shame, that website was my world when beginning to approach the Suttas. I used to find the search function very good if I needed guidance on a specific issue as well.
Admittedly though I haven’t used it much I the last few years… Things move on though and if there is a need someone will fill it.
Feels like I’ve been using ATI for decades. I have benefited immensely from it. I have pointed many Buddhists and beginners to it. I just want to say thanks to all involved in ATI. Metta
Without knowing the specific technical constraints it’s hard to say. There could be security vulnerabilities opening it to hacking. Still, though, I think the breaking of links and the simple fact of preserving history would be enough reason to keep it alive.
If only there were a bodhisattva willing to step up!
My guess (total guess) is that the site is built in an early version of PHP, maybe to inject the headers and footers. It was a thing that we did back in the early days of website building.
It looks like someone is working on a modernised version with the hope of taking over the domain. Hopefully they’ll keep the URL structure in tact (or write a whole stack of rewrites).
The search box doesn’t work right because it tries to load the search results page in the github root domain instead of in the ati directory. If you manually add the /ati/ in the url after trying to search, the results come up!
There have been mirrors of ATI for years. Even before John abandoned it gave it over to someone who agreed to maintain it but then also abandoned it. The issue isn’t the data so much as the position on the web.
Also, the domain name itself is more than 26 years old. That means it will be a prime target for a gambling/porn site to grab up. With all of those inbound links it would be a real treasure for them.
