AccessToInsight.org is closing down- April 1st 2026

I realize we are kind of getting into the weeds, but I think Russia is blocking Cloudflair atm.

Internetting is hard.

@Bodhipaksa, I didn’t mean that an individual would be better. Far from it.

For others curious about this, it’s here: Download the Whole Website: ATI Offline Edition

For some reason, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge flagged the download as insecure. So you might have to click “Keep File” or something like that in the browser’s Downloads button/window to get the file.

This is because the link uses http instead of https. This does not happen with https:

I would hope the total level of effort to keep a website managed and updated (with SSL certs and the like) is fully sketched out before this goes down the rabbit hole too deep. Or are people talking about archiving it and nothing beyond that.

Archiving it would make the most sense. Managing SSL certs is pretty easy and can be automated using Certbot. The biggest challenge would be in converting it something that can be easily maintained and is cheap to host in order to preserve the links, but there are people in this thread who have already converted it to a GitHub pages site. The recommendation someone made to convert it to HTML/CSS would go a long way to simplifying the management and allow it to be containerized and maintained with minimal effort to preserve the site’s presence in search results.

I wouldn’t be opposed to it, but it looks like there are others.

Lol, not to put too fine a point on it, but I don’t think this would be a good motivation. It should be preserved for what it is, not for what it can do for us! :folded_hands:

That sounds oddly cynical. I was suggesting it as a benefit, not as the motivation for saving ATI.

I have used ATI for decades and have great love for it. Of course I want it to be preserved for what it is. But if SC were to take it over it would be helpful to ATI visitors to be able to hop over here to see alternative translations, and it would benefit SC as well, since the site often doesn’t rank well on searches at present. The more people who explore the Dharma gems here, the better.

With all due respect, I’m not aware of any active discussion to drive up traffic on SuttaCentral. Or to address a gap in this regard. At least, not when we look at the numbers and trends. Perhaps I’m mistaken as I’m not privy to all the discussions.

Thus the argument for archiving.

Well, then, we’ll need more resources to do it, and I’m not talking about funding. That’s only half the story. The discussion deserves a plan that accounts for all the required effort IMO.

Hi, Beth.

I wasn’t assuming that anyone here had web-site metrics as a primary concern, or that there was some kind of “gap” that needed to be addressed. I was just thinking it would be good to have more people find and benefit from the excellent resources here.

And of course the practicality or otherwise of such a thing is something I know nothing about. I was just tossing out a thought.

Even though it’s not very Buddhist, fingers crossed that something will work out.

For clarity, the previously linked zip archive is already static as far as I can tell.
The previously linked GH Pages mirror, whose source code is on GH, is that archive plus a few changes, particularly around search configuration. It already has HTTPS.
The least work possible may be to just throw a CNAME on that (or a similar fork) to the ATI domain and modify ATI’s DNS configuration accordingly. For more free bandwidth, could host it on Cloudflare Pages instead, which similarly has HTTPS built-in (for static sites, most hosts have it built-in these days) and can be configured with a custom domain too. (but may need a secondary mirror for Russian access)

So, if necessary, the technical pieces can be sorted fairly quickly. Of course, it would be ideal if it’s planned out by BCBS and a trusted “inheritor” organization who will control the domain itself (and therefore choose where to direct it).

Important Update About Access to Insight

We have received an outpouring of concern and care for Access to Insight, and we are deeply grateful for the many messages about what this site has meant to practitioners around the world.

The site runs on aging technology, and we do not currently have the technical or financial capacity to modernize it. We are actively exploring responsible next steps, including transferring stewardship to a credible organization or securing funding to update and stabilize the platform.

For now, Access to Insight will remain online, though occasional outages are likely.

We will share updates here as decisions are made. Thank you for your patience and care.
