I liked Ajahn Mahā Chatchai’s approach since the beginning, but meeting him in person (late 2023) left a long-lasting impression.
In fact, I’ve been hoping to find a teacher with a similar style up here in Chiang Mai. I pass through Bangkok a couple of times a year when travelling to/from Europe, but it’s not always possible to take extra time and my Thai isn’t good enough yet. Having a samādhi-oriented teacher nearby, whom I can visit often, would be great!
Dear Bernat: if you happen to find a similar teacher in Chiang Mai, please let us know… Like you I visited Wat Phleng some years ago, and my Thai is so limited that I really didn’t understand much of his Sunday morning talk, but just being in the room with him along with all of his practitioners was really exceptional. For me what has been important is that he focuses on Metta training, and this is clearly a practice that is so necessary in these times.
I had the fortune to go with my partner that time, who acted as translator, and that allowed me to have a one hour chat with Ajahn that, quite frankly, was very impactful. Where my partner got lost due to technical language, my Pali helped and Ajahn and I could communicate.
Yes, let’s connect if either of us finds a samādhi-oriented teacher in the area, particularly mettā. One option is to find a teacher of ‘old meditation’ (kammatthan boran) – kruba, wearing burgundy robes and a mala/rosary. I went to Wat Ku Tao where the abbot still practices this but he wasn’t there and I was told he’s very old.
