The moot question is “Rebirth of what”? The concept of rebirth by Buddha is different than the traditional rebirth of Hinduism(Brahminism). If Anatta is Buddha’s core principle, there can not be Rebirth Literal sense(Reincarnation). But rebirth is a scientific phenomenon. We are reborn every moment. We are never the same from moment to moment. After Death, the body’s elements donot die, the join the pool of Element in the nature, from the same pool elements of the dead (in part) become the part of a new being. Same way The conciousness/ mind, which is in the form of energy, never dies but joins the nature’s pool of energy, to form a new being(a part). ( Nam-Rupa concept). This is the concept explained by Dr.B.R.Ambedkar in " Buddha and His Dhamma", and appeals to scientific temper, Maintaining Buddha, as the most Rationalist ever seen by the world. Being rational is one of the criteria, to call it a " Buddha’s word".

@vasant have you read much of the early suttas? The past life recall as described in the suttas is like the evidences for rebirth above, just different mechanism of remembering.

Please read cases of rebirth evidences where people actually recall their past lives and have independent verification of the information they got from past life recall.

Externally it looks the same as the Hindu reincarnation, but philosophically, it’s the Hindus who mistaken that there’s a thing in the body and mind that is eternal, whereas Buddha said nothing can be found which is eternal in this body and mind.

Being a Medical man for (specialised for more than 40 years), this subject can not be alien to me. I have some of the scientific scrutiny books which do not endorse past life view, including out of body experience, which can now be produced in anybody by stimulating certain areas of the brain( even this phenomena had no scientific explanation until few years ago but now science has gound the explanation).
