An invitation from Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi — BGR’s “Walk to feed the Hungry”

https://buddhistglobalrelief.org/2026-nyc-walk-details/

Dear Dharma Friends,

After a long pause, Buddhist Global Relief will be resuming our Walk to Feed the Hungry—and our New York Walk will take place on September 26, in Astoria Park, Queens. I cordially invite everyone in the greater New York area to join this beautiful, joyful, uplifting event, which swells the heart and brings us together under the banner of spiritual friendship.

The purpose of the walk is to support the work of Buddhist Global Relief, whose mission is to tackle chronic hunger and malnutrition. We currently sponsor sixty projects around the world, which range from far-off Mongolia, through Asia, Africa, and Latin America to enclaves of hunger here in the U.S. Our projects provide direct food aid to the hungry; support the education of poor girls; enable women to start home cottage industries; and help farmers adopt climate-resilient models of agriculture. We also partner with major relief organizations in addressing crisis levels of hunger.

The walk is our way to show solidarity with this important work. We’ll do several rounds of walking in Astoria Park and end the walk with a communal picnic meal, with food and short dharma talks by distinguished speakers on the work of conscientious compassion.

**If you intend to join us for the meal, please register with us in advance here:

I urge those of you in the New York area to join us, and to bring your family members and friends. I also respectfully propose that friends of BGR in other states—and even outside the U.S.—organize their own Walk to Feed the Hungry on any convenient date this fall. If it’s too late, give thought to the idea of holding a walk next year. We can provide guidelines for organizing a walk. If that seems too massive a challenge, you can arrange for a more humble event—like a one-day retreat or pooja to generate funds to support BGR’s mission. If you can’t walk yourself, you can donate to support others on a walk.

The Buddha said, “The gift of food is the gift of life.” By joining the walk, or supporting others on the walk, you’ll be giving the gift of life to people in need throughout the world. So please mark this date on your calendar, register in advance, and come out to join us for the walk.

With blessings,

Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi

Dear Friend,

We are honored that you will be joining Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi and Dharma friends from across the NYC area this Saturday, September 26, for Buddhist Global Relief’s 2026 NYC Walk to Feed the Hungry in Astoria Park.

We will walk, rain or shine. The forecast for Saturday currently includes the possibility of rain. Please check the weather forecast the morning of, and bring what you need accordingly—rainwear, umbrella, etc. Also, please dress accordingly as we will be by the water where it tends to be windier and cooler than inland. In the unlikely event that we must cancel the walk due to predicted unsafe conditions, we will notify you on Thursday evening.

Lunch, Dharma fellowship, and brief program will be indoors, instead of the previously announced picnic in the park. A vegan lunch will be provided for pre-registered participants. The deadline for pre-registered for lunch is on Thursday. Please note that our venue may not have enough seats for everyone. So, please be prepared to reserve seats for the monastics, the speakers, and those in need. (Please pardon this inconvenience as we try to dance with the weather conditions and make adjustments as things arise. Thank you for understanding.)

Our program will include short talks by distinguished speakers on the work of conscientious compassion:

  • Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi, BGR founder and chair
  • Rev. James Lynch, Buddhist Council of New York
  • Ven. Chang Hwa, Chan Meditation Center
  • Father Adam Bucko, Beloved Community for Engaged Spirituality
  • Leah Hashinger, BGR partner organization CARE

We look forward to walking with you on Saturday. Together, let’s feed the hungry, nourish our hearts, and move toward a more caring world, step by step.

With metta,

Buddhist Global Relief NYC Walk Team

Please note: The NYC Walk to Feed the Hungry has been canceled due to the predicted storm.

Dear Friends,

We have some sad news: the weather report for Saturday is not at all favorable for holding Buddhist Global Relief’s 2026 NYC Walk to Feed the Hungry on Saturday. We said we would walk “rain or shine,” but the rain and wind expected on Saturday will be much more than we imagined. A nor’easter storm system is forecast to hit the Tri-State area over the weekend, with 40 to 50 mph wind gusts starting Friday night through Saturday.

Everyone’s safety and well-being is most important to us. Therefore, after much deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Walk. We were very much looking forward to being with everyone and to finally have our beloved Walk in person after six years, the first since Covid hit the country. However, the weather deities have not been on our side.

We appreciate your understanding and are deeply grateful for your continued support of BGR and its projects in the US and around the world. Indeed, the work continues, with or without a storm. We hope you will follow our online programs and join next year’s Walk, preparations for which are already underway!

Please stay safe and be well wherever you are.

With metta and gratitude,

Buddhist Global Relief NYC Walk Team
