I heard a story once that ven sariputta once was going on alms round with the other monk and since he is the eldest there he was in front,
Then as he was walking he saw Infront of him a mud pond rather than going to the side he jumped over it then those monks thought what is this elder doing then they went to the Buddha and told him what had happened.
then the Buddha said don’t mind that because sariputta was born as monkey for 500 lifetimes
And that some old habits are hard to remove.
Similar to ven pilindavaccha who used to say to other monks as lowlife in ud3.6
Can someone tell me if they heard this story because I want the source of this story is it the sutta or commentaries.
Thanks
Doing a search for monkey jump
will take you to many previous discussions on this topic, especially this answer:
Everyone should get in the habit of using the search. After so many years the forum already has answers to many of these common questions.
And this is a pity at the same time
Because it’s not only common questions but also interesting discussions like e.g. “Buddhism and vegetarianism” that have been explored years ago by users (some of them no longer active as far as I can see) and then for new-ish users it’s either resurrecting an old thread which feels a bit odd or starting a new one with arguments that probably have been spelled out already
I like searching for questions in old threads. Reading through an entire evolving discussion helps to quickly see the bigger picture and gives me less time and opportunity to form an opinion or view!
