first: i could not decide whether this should go here or in the discussion section
i host a group of mostly lay people who read the suttas but we have been reading a bit from the vinaya lately, and we were reading khandhaka 20, the chapter on nuns.
the first section does appear a bit harsh, at least in the context of modern views on gender. i was curious how authentic this passage is - is this considered early?
i know there are discrepancies between sutta and āgama regarding the kisā gotamī sutta in AN. however, unless we posit that these passages are a complete fabrication, there seems to be some authenticity in what was said, even tho it doesn’t align with modern views.
we are going to pick up next week where we left off in the same reading. i would like to know which sections have disputed authenticity according to early buddhist scholars. sources would be appreciated
for reference, we are reading ajahn brahmali’s translation but we may also reference to horner if anything stands out
