Hello, does anybody know any Dhamma talks that touch upon the basics of what the Buddha taught without going too deep? It’s for someone interested, yet not super familiar with Buddhism. Nornally Dhamma talks have a lot of references to other Suttas which I like but it would be super confusing to a beginner. Anybody able to help?
:))
My Buddhism 101 course contains a number of Dhamma talks I’ve curated to be appropriate for beginners.
I found these 2 videos, the first one is from Doug’s Dharma, who I think is a member of this forum.
The one below is something I just watched a few minutes ago and thought it was a pretty decent offering by the PBS channel in America. Usually they can be a little ‘off’ but I thought it was surprisingly decent and they use a video game simile to explain things, pretty cool.
Here is a great podcast that was used as part of the original ‘Introduction to Buddhism’ series by the BSWA, quite a long time ago.
I have always found Ajahn Vayama Bhikkhuni’s teachings to be very clear and easy to access. This is one of the best introductions and overviews I have heard in a short talk. It is only available on podcast and is buried deep in the BSWA archives now.
Ajahn Vayama was the founding Abbott of Dhammasara Nuns Monastery and a very inspiring practitioner, with a very pragmatic approach to the training.
WOW. Thanks for THAT, Bhante!
This is not a talk, but a small book containing edited transcripts of talks by Ajahn Brahm. Opening Up to Kindfulness, found in the middle of the page, is about basic Buddhist teachings, not a history of Buddhism.
Within Our Own Hearts by Ayya Khema is a collection of 12 Dhamma talks transcribed into a short book. I think it’s great for a beginner. It doesn’t use much Pali terminology, which they wouldn’t know, and has a lot of helpful metaphors and real-life examples that make it easy to understand. You can easily find a free PDF version online.
While the person I had in mind wouldn’t be interested, I am! It looks like a promising book, I just downloaded a pdf. Thank you.
Your username and pfp are totes adorbs btw!
