AN4.169:2.1: Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo diṭṭheva dhamme sasaṅkhāraparinibbāyī hoti?
And how is a person fully is fully extinguished in this very life by making extra effort?

“Is fully” is too much. Again in segment 3.1.


In AN5.35 and AN5.38 we find parinibbāti anāsavo, each time translated “the undefiled are fully extinguished”. Pali is singular, English plural.

In Snp3.12 the Pali is in fact plural, parinibbanti anāsavā, and here the English reads “the undefiled become fully extinguished”. “Become” versus “are”.

I wonder if you could be swayed to change the blurb for SN22.101 to the more universally understood “chicken”. I thought it was a typo, fwiw.

“sn-blurbs:sn22.101”: “Contemplating the aggregates leads to liberation, but this may not be immediately apparent. The Buddha illustrates this with similes of a chook sitting on eggs, the wearing away of an axe handle, and the rotting of a ship’s rigging.”,

MN49:8.1: ‘Ahampi kho evaṁ, brahme, jānāmi:
‘the Divinity, I too know that

This is the Buddha addressing Brahma. The article feels strange here, perhaps he should just address him as “divinity”. But if the article is used, it should be spelled with a capital, as it is the start of the sentence.

Bhante @sujato at SN2.8:8.3 there’s a large blank space where the repeated Pali verse from earlier in the sutta has been omitted.

I’m guessing you are on FireFox? This is a known issue. It’s very large on FF, not so big on Chrome.

Is there still that much space when Pali is not shown? You can type v key to toggle the Pali.

If the omitted verse was longer, I think the space would be even larger.

Bhante @sujato, while I am about to edit all the cases of Brahmā as a personal designation of a deity to “Göttlichkeit” (divinity), I start having doubts about it. Should we really refer to Brahmā as “Divinity”, while Māra remains in its Pali form? I feel we should either give both of these a translated name, or none of them. What do you think? :thinking:

While the method might seems a little arcane at first, once you have remembered a few abbreviations it is really quite simple.

Paccayika is generally translated “dependable”, but in AN70:22.1 it is “trustworthy”.

Ajahn @Brahmali, there’s an issue with the titles of the English translation all over the vinaya. For example, these are from the Khandhakas:

Most of the titles don’t translate the names of the khandhakas, but instead the name of the first chapter of the respective khandhaka, i.e. “The account of Mahapajapati” instead of Bhikkhuni Khandhaka, “Being uncomfortable” instead of Pavarana Khandhaka, etc.
Similar issues occur all throughout the vinaya. For example, the bhikkhuni pacittiya about garlic:
