BUDDHADHAMMA - The Laws of Nature and Their Benefits to Life - by Bhikkhu P. A. Payutto

Sounded good, and I like my books in hard copy , so I’ve just ordered this …. But is it the complete text or are there other parts / volumes I need to find? It was something like 382 pages if that helps for answering my question

No, it’s an abridged version.

There’s another abridged version, but larger, available here, and that is 856 pages ($25.65 USD before tax/shipping).

Having said that, the unabridged version is available in 7 paperback volumes and 2146 pages (and well over $150 USD plus tax/shipping).

Or a free epub, complete and unabridged.

Thank you. I bought the other one off Amazon too so I might still have time to cancel the order and swap it out for the 800+ page one.

I think I’ll have to put up with the e book on the other version as that translates to around $300 Aussie for me.

The only book I’ve paid that much for is Waldo Vieria’s - Projectiology - way back when you could only buy it directly from him and have it shipped from Portugal or something. ( Then I read up to page 46-47 - found what I was specifically looking for and it’s sat on the shelf ever since lol :joy:)

Thanks again … I better bolt over to Amazon and see what I can do about a swapsie🤞

Edit: doh, too late, they shipped it already - oh well, I can have a sneak peek and decide if it’s worth investing more in

Doesn’t Amazon offer free returns? You can just return it as soon as it arrives, and that would go towards the costs of the others.

Yeah, I can afford the 7 volumes, but it’s also a big price for something I already have in epub. I prefer print books, but I also mostly work abroad and carrying paper is a b***h.

Best of luck to you!

I’m not sure when it comes from a third party seller instead of an Amazon warehouse …. But I’ll try that when it arrives :crossed_fingers:

I have always been able to return material from 3rd-party sellers; however, they sometimes make you pay for shipping/packaging. So there might be some loss there.

Also, check out reviews of the qualities of the respective translations. The Essential Buddhadhama has some glowing reviews from academics, but some people complain about its readability. I haven’t seen it, so I can’t comment.

For those who have enjoyed reading Ven. P.A. Payutto’s Buddhadhamma, I can recommend Ven. Ñāṇananda’s Nibbāna Sermons. While Buddhadhamma covers a wide scope, I found the depth of explanations in the Nibbāna Sermons very helpful.

Ebook formats of Ven. Ñāṇananda’s book are now available to download:

There are several excerpt readings on YouTube from various readers. You could prolly pece together most of it if you’re reading challenged like I seem to be more and more these days.

PS/edit: although it appears to me that this guy pretty much reads the whole thing? https://youtu.be/m9nxXxCe4oc?si=eDtroxiY0EMJYmPf

Hello, I’m currently reading bits of this book on pdf while waiting for the paper edition to arrive, and I have a question about the sutta references in this book.

It seems they are referencing Thai editions of the sutta pitaka, by volume and page number.
That makes them sadly useless for someone who does not have access to this particular edition (and can read Thai) as the only info it gives you is “it appears somewhere in this Nikaya”.

Or maybe I’m missing something, does someone know of a way to track that nomenclature back to something like MN108 or SN56.11 by any chance ?

Thanks !

I believe the references are actually PTS references, not Thai edition refs. There are numerous ways to search PTS refs on SuttaCentral or convert them or look them up

You’re right, thanks a lot Bhante Khemarato !

I just tried the pts-converter tool on random references and it did the job perfectly.

Have a nice day.
