Hi, I love to make things. I have a rush to create a game. Could you please give me a suggestion? I would like to create a game about the City of monks (not monastery, but the very city). But I’m afraid that adding humor (and everything but dharma) might make the monks look wrong. Am I correct in thinking that it is wrong for monks to talk about anything outside of dharma? Also, how incorrect would it be to create a similar game, because I find that Buddhists are more or less normal to movies and books about Buddhism. I still read and study a lot of things, but I can’t find answers to my questions. Thank you for your attention.
Hey. It seems like you already have somewhat of a direction in mind, but I’ll spiel anyhoo…
I’ve often considered commissioning someone for a mobile application based on AN8.5. I guess it’d be not so much a game, more of a mindfulness aid. The basic idea is that whenever one becomes aware that one of those 8 considerations is occupying the mind, they open the app and add a +1 to the appropriate item. Over time, they’d see which ones they tend to obsess over…and hopefully remind themselves that these considerations are impermanent.
It sounds better in my imagination than written down
Are you talking about Kōya, Wakayama, Japan?
The EBTs themselves contain some humor and of course some modern monks use humor in their teachings.
That mostly depends on the depth of your knowledge and understanding of Buddhism… and, I guess, your intentions / motivations for the work.
Hello. Interesting! But I’m not a mobile add-on, but a rpg maker. I’d like to take the vajayani direction and write a surrealistic game about tibet. But such an approach can hurt people, monks that’s why I’m asking. I wonder what is best not to do.
Hello. No, I am inspired by Tibet, not Japan. There are cities of monks there. Thanks for the answer about humor, I would like to make the player smile, but I have to be careful. My motivation is just very, very inspired by these cities and vajayana.
This is a forum dedicated to the EBTs not to the Tibetan tradition. You should probably reach out to that community for advice instead.
Online there is r/TibetanBuddhism and DharmaWheel … others? But best is probably to go to Tibetan temples and talk to actual Tibetan Buddhists in meat-space.
I hope you find what your inspiration needs
For what it’s worth, the game Black Myth: Wukong is a game based on Journey to the West, a Chinese classic about the translation of sutras to Chinese. It also contains combat and a warrioir “buddha”, as per the original Chinese story. Pretty interesting tale, that one.
I was inspired by Rain World to learn about Buddhism. In this game, you play as a cat that lives in a living wild ecosystem. There is karma, liberation, and rebirth. It’s a bit simplistic, because it’s an artistic idea, but I really liked it.
