Did The Buddha Teach a Doctrine of Salvation?

That is a good example of how terms can easily be confused.

Vihara (विहार, vihāra) is the Sanskrit and Pali term for a Buddhist monastery.
In Thailand and China (called jingshe; Chinese: 精舎), “vihara” has a narrower meaning, and designates a small shrine hall or retreat house.

A temple (from the Latin word templum) is a structure reserved for religious or spiritual rituals. The term is typically used for such buildings belonging to all faiths where a more specific term such as church, mosque or synagogue is not applicable. These include Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Ancient Egyptian religion.

It is worth noting that the Vinaya contains a good hint on what vihāra meant back in the days of early Sangha: a dwelling for bhikkhus or bhikkhunis.

To be thus named, such dwelling would have to be larger than a single-roomed and 3 x 1.75 meters-sized hut (kuṭī).

Another key term around this topic is ārāma, which refers to a certain plot of land offered to the Sangha for the benefit of the bhikkhus and bhikkhunis where they meet & hold discussions about sacred secular matters. In it one would find both vihāras and kuṭīs built.

The most significant difference between the Pure Land and a theistic heaven is that the Pure Land is not a permanent destination.

Pure Land teachers like Shandao and Shinran taught that the Pure Land is the realm of Nirvana, and that one attains Buddhahood there for the purpose of coming back to this world, to lead all other beings to Buddhahood.

Amida Buddha, rather than a theistic god standing above us, wishes for all beings to attain the same Buddhahood as himself.

Bodhisattva Dharmakara, who became Amida Buddha in the beginningless past, appears and sets forth his all-surpassing Forty-Eight Vows with which to save all beings, and promises to fulfill them all without fail.

This gatha (hymn) is so named because Amida Buddha reiterated in his Vows, that should all beings wallowing in the sea of delusion not be saved and that should there be any place that his Name, Namu-Amida-Butsu, not be heard, he will not attain Buddhahood.
