OK, well you likely won’t be able to set things up like him then. Unless you get a device that runs MacOS or some Linux distro. It might be possible to root your Chromebook to install some small Linux distro but it may not be worth the risk.
And I just clicked on the link on the page I gave you to install DictTango and it appears that it is no longer available in the Google Play Store. @Khemarato.bhikkhu, have you run into this? I believe that was the app you recommended to me.
I went to the DictTango developer’s page and it mentions this:
Difference between the version here and the Google Play Store version
Starting from Android 11, all Android apps are no longer allowed to access files outside their designated app folders on the SD Card (located under the /Android/data directory). Although adding global file management permissions can resolve this issue, the Google Play Store does not allow regular apps to have this permission. However, this version includes the additional permission, so after user authorization, it can access all files on the SD Card.
Please note, however, not to upgrade this version to the one from the Google Play Store, as this will cause the loss of global file management permissions, preventing access to dictionary files on the SD Card.
So that tells me that there may not be any Android app in the Play store that will open the DPD file. So, @landis, unless you can sideload the version from the developer’s site you may be well and truly out of luck.
One last hope… If you are able to install the SC browser Extension in Chrome (or Firefox) it has a feature that lets you highlight a word and right click to find that word in the online version of the DPD. It’s really just a shortcut to copy the word, open up the online version, past the word, and press enter. And if the text you are working with is in Google Docs, that may not work anyway as Google Docs overrides the right click menu.
If it’s any consolation… The feature that John uses to simply click on a word and have it open the definition in GoldenDict… It’s not easy to set up. I wasn’t able to do it on my fully Bill Gates setup. I have to use the alternative of highlighting the word and then hitting Ctrl + C twice. I’m used to it, so it’s not an inconvenience.
And in the lemonade out of lemons department… Having some friction in looking up words might incentivize memorization. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
