I would say rather that the misunderstanding of this phenomenon is what underpins such techniques (and New Age spirituality in general). You can’t just manifest things independently of your circumstances. That way you will end up blaming the victims of racism for being poor, or the victims of sexual assault for being traumatized.
We choose how to respond to our circumstances, and those choices, operating with the given circumstances, affect how the circumstances change in the future. We are like actors in a play; how we perform our role affects everyone around us and shapes the meaning and experience of the play as a whole. But we can’t just wish ourselves into another play.
