I should have started with DN 12 Lohicca! In this sutta we have a helpful new segment-numbering in the region of the elision that I’m interested in.
The region starts after segment dn12:19.4
Within the region, segments are numbered:
dn12:20-55.1
…
dn12:20-55.5
dn12:56-62.1
…
dn12:56-62.5
dn12:63-77.1
…
dn12:63-77.6
This is clearly much friendlier to expanding the peyyālas in this region than what I was working with in DN 3 Ambaṭṭha, in which elided segment-group numbers are simply skipped rather than indicated as ranges.
Incidentally, the pattern of interspersing refrains particular to each sutta into this long passage continues.
So in DN2 we have “This pertains to their ethics” and “This too, great king, is a fruit of the ascetic life that’s apparent in the present life which is better and finer than the former ones”
In DN3 we have “This pertains to their conduct” and “This pertains to their knowledge”
In DN12 Lohicca, the refrain is: "A teacher under whom a disciple achieves such a high distinction is one who does not deserve to be reprimanded. "
