Experimental Searchbar extension 🧰 for browsers

[This is related to the ongoing discussion here: Developing a 🔌 browser plugin for SuttaCentral?. General discussion of potential new plugin/extension features can be had there. Eventually the plugin below will probably be merged into a larger plugin]

The above Firefox/Chrome plugin will allow you to type sutta names, citations, and search terms right into your browser’s URL bar (aka search bar, awesome bar, omnibox). Click the link above for instructions on how to install. It’s not in either extension marketplace yet since it’s still being developed.

The following is how it will look in FireFox.

In the “omnibox” (aka url bar or search bar) type sc and part of the title of a sutta:

documentation-FF-suttaName

Then arrow down or click on the sutta you want.

Or type a citation:

sc pluss citation

Or simply type a search string and press enter:

That will take you to the SuttaCentral.net results page:

search results page

NOTE!

While this is cool and all, the built in search feature on the SuttaCentral website already provides something very similar. For example, on SutttaCentral.net type the letter s to put your cursor in the search box. Then type sn56.11:

You can see that the sutta you want is the very first result

It also works for sutta titles:

At the moment the native search on SC is better than the plugin because it does not require exact strings (e.g. SN56:11 works on SC but the plugin requires SN56.11)

Still, I’m putting it out there in case it meets someone’s specific needs or inspires ideas for other features. As I said above, This feature will probably get merged into a future general purpose SC extension.

Suttacentral search function frequently gives me offline error that I have to rely on Google search using site:suttacentral.net to narrow it to suttacentral

I have no idea why I keep hitting this issue regardless of the browser choice.

Will the plugin overcome this issue?

The plugin stores all of its data in your browser profile, so it doesn’t need to be online to work (although of course you need to be on line to view suttas unless you have the site saved for offline use… Which actually is a good case for the plugin since I don’t think even the quick results I showed above in the built in search will work offline, although I’m not sure).

It would be great if you could post about this when it happens in the search bug thread: SuttaCentral Search Bugs 🪰 Hopefully we can figure out your problem there.
