Trying to find a sutta you’ve heard of but can’t locate? Try using these tools: Comprehensive Index of Pāli Suttas “A Buddhist View” Sutta Searcher Still can’t find it? Ask in here! :lotus:

Hmm thank you. It’s a wonderful sutta! But not the one I’m looking for… That he doesn’t understand at first and is confused is quite the point… I mean, there is the Angulimala story which is similar, though I doubt I would have confused him with a generic brahmin!

It’s a wild guess, maybe it’s SN 1.20

I remember reading a Sutta where the Buddha says that even giving rise to the thought of doing the wholesome is good/meritorious. Does anyone know which Sutta that is?

MN 8:13.1 Cunda, I say that even giving rise to the thought of skillful qualities is very helpful, let alone following that path in body and speech. Sadhu sadhu!

I’ve searched, but can’t locate a sutta—hoping that someone knows which one I’m talking about. A guy goes up to the Buddha, or maybe Sariputta, and says “My view is that nothing is acceptable”. The response is astute: “Is this view of yours (that nothing is acceptable) acceptable?”. “It wouldn’t …

This sounds like the ‘guy’ is Venerable Arițțha. He appears in mn22 and sn54.6 It might be that you read these two suttas in combination?

MN74 “If I were to accept this view, worthy Gotama, it would make no difference, it would make no difference!” “Esā ce me, bho gotama, diṭṭhi khameyya, taṁpassa tādisameva, taṁpassa tādisamevā”ti.

Thank you both, I have the one I was looking for. :folded_hands:

My search skills have again failed me (I looked in CIPS, the subject index on SC and also googled). Maybe someone recalls this one… There’s a sutta that uses an illustration of a stick used to prod a funeral pyre (I believe). The pyre is fuelled by dung, so the ends of the stick have dung on them…

[image] Radius: a stick used to prod a funeral pyre This simile is found in AN 4.95, SN 22.80, and in Iti 91: Suppose there was a firebrand for lighting a funeral pyre, burning at both ends, and smeared with dung in the middle. It couldn’t be used as timber either in the village or the wild…
