I keep getting HTTP 504 error since last night. The server is cranky.
Yesterday when I tried to open a thread with photo and link heavy, the thread would jump up and down, having difficulty loading.
Right now there is a lot of lag going on. I can not open two threads at the same time like before.
Threads are taking tens of seconds to load. Was actually just going to post about it!
Starting yesterday, and getting worse today, loading pages is taking ages, and very often I see “Bad gateway, nginx, error 502”. Reloading, hard refreshing, clicking on the page title, etc. eventually gives me the page I want to see, but this can take very long.
Just now I made an edit to a post, and when committing it, the edit seemed to have been swallowed by discourse. After reloading the page, I got “bad gateway” first and then, after an eon of loading time, my post came back including the edit.
Trying to reproduce my error message in order to take a screenshot, I just don’t get it … seems like discourse is afraid of getting caught in its bad behavior … ![]()
This is not the error message I got before, but another one.
I only saw this now. This is the error message I have seen before.
Another thing I observe is that showing the notifications can take very long. I see a number at my user icon which tells me that I have notifications; when clicking the icon there is a loading circle turning in the notification window that can take very long. Sometimes, instead of the user icon of the person who has replied to me, I see the discourse icon on that notification.
I started getting those as well. I’d attach a screenshot but just got an error trying to upload it ![]()
I’m having lots of issues with the website today. Super slow and freezing up. I closed browsers on Macbook Pro and iPhone, deleted cache, restarted both and was able to post successfully. Then I attempted an edit and it froze up with a window saying “drafts offline” and locked me out. Then my post is seen, but greyed out. I clicked post here and an OK screen popped up…lots of 502 Bad Gateways…
I haven’t had as many issues as other folks, so perhaps geographical location has something to do with it?
A few days ago, search wasn’t working with an error something like “server is overloaded, search has been disabled”. And loading a thread or scrolling through it was taking decently longer.
Other than that, I’ve had a bit more lag than usual, including when editing posts (possibly worse with longer posts?), but not so much more that it bothered me too much. Nothing quite as bad as other folks wrote.
If longer posts and images are possible culprits, then it would suggest the size of request matters. For instance, the request buffer being too small, limited memory or disk space, etc. If geographic location matters too, then perhaps a CDN or proxy somewhere is configured with lower limits
So much snappier now! Thanks so much for the hard work to get everything upgraded

Thanks so much Michael and Ven Snowbird. It’s so much better
Thanks for all the feedback folks!
It was all @Michaelh’s work today.
I’d be curious to hear if people feel it is better than when the disaster was happening or better that it was when it was at its best. If that makes sense. At them moment we aren’t having that recent problem. The hope is that the problem won’t come back and that things are running significantly faster than they were even at the best of times.
Better than it’s been in at least a year
I can’t fix it on a specific time frame, but in principle I would agree.
