I am not a native speaker, but I’d think it should be "they are divided into eight classes.

The Monks’ Analysis begins with a story of how the Pātimokkha rules came about. The story begins at the village of Verañjā, with a brahmin objecting to the Buddha’s revolutionary new teachings. The Buddha then describes his awakening experience, upon which the brahmin accepts his superior insight and becomes a disciple. The purpose of this preamble is presumably to establish the Buddha’s authority in laying down the rules for the monks and the nuns.
