Is anyone else seeing a bug in the posting widget?

When I’m doing my corrections, the editing widget keeps jumping back to the start. I want to highlight a passage and add it to my reply, then suddenly it’s not there any more.

Yikes, and now it seems it hasn’t added my post at all. Wondering if this is a browser (Firefox) issue, or if anyone’s seen anything similar?

I have been experiencing the same problem Bhante. And I thought my internet was slow or something. I was using Safari on my iPhone when this happened. Also, I am with Telstra.

Phew. Well, maybe a bug in a recent update of Discourse?

@Adutiya was experiencing problems with multiple quotes in a post too.

What do you mean by editing widget?

If you could make a screenshot that would be golden.

In my case, when I try to edit my post, the text cursor jumps all over the place. It was everywhere and not where I wanted it to be. Eventually, I lost track of my text.

OK. That’s called the composer.

So when you say “jumping back to the start” do you mean your cursor is placed at the beginning when it should be at the end? Or by go back to the beginning you meant it deletes everything?

I can’t get it to reproduce. That’s why a screen recording would be so helpful. But I realize it’s a lot of work.

Sorry folks are having problems.

OK, I made my own screenshot (Firefox, Win11) of what I think you all are trying to do:

I’m not having any problems, but maybe this isn’t what you are talking about.

I’m not seeing any reports like this over on Bug - Discourse Meta

(for the time being, staff can upload .mp4 files. Otherwise .gif should work for everyone)

Again, I’m sorry this is happening. We did upgrade the software a couple weeks ago at the same time the new themes were introduced. So it wouldn’t be unusual for a bug to start right about then.

I have deifnitely noted a change, as the forum loads quite slowly for me.

Yes, exactly that was it. I have been working this afternoon without any problems. Although I’ve also been careful to make shorter posts, so perhaps that has helped.

It’s intermittent. I’ll post here again if I see it.

Slowness would probably be unrelated. Also, we added more computing resources to the forum so things should actually be running faster.

Of course it shouldn’t make a difference, but if anything is going to push the boundaries, it will be your mega responses.

You could also try switching to the rich text composer:

Maybe if it wasn’t having to maintain two areas (markdown and preview) it would get less stressed? I don’t know. In any case, each of those quotes you make have a bit of complexity to render, so perhaps that is what is tripping it up.

I’m assuming that if everything in the composer suddenly disappears you are trying a ctrl-z to see if that brings it back. Probably won’t work, but it’s worth a try.

But shorter posts is probably the best way. Or if all else fails, do the “Copy Quote” and just work in notepad till you finish and then paste.

It started happening the day of the theme updates. It takes a few good seconds, between 5 and 10 for the forum to load for me. Not a major issue in any way, but it was noticeable when it started happening

FWIW, I haven’t noticed any issues with the composer myself, although I’m mostly on mobile[1] and typically write straight markdown(ish) with no preview. Some of mine can be long too.

Yea, I haven’t checked what library Discourse is using for this, but typically large textareas need optimization as simply re-rendering the entirety of the text on each character input can result in lag which gets worse the longer it is (I have a bit of past experience with it).
EDIT: they seem to have a custom implementation: the UI is relatively simple, but there’s a lot of logic separated out. There’s been some minor changes recently, but nothing that really stands out to me :person_shrugging:

It’s been on average significantly faster for me since the update. First loads on different browsers were quite slow due to cache busting, but that was more or less expected.

Maybe try manually clearing your cache for the forum?

  1. Mostly Chrome for Android. Sometimes Firefox for Android. Sometimes macOS Chrome. ↩︎

I have had no problems with safari iOS and MacOS or the latest Firefox.

I have had other problems with the Discourse app on iOS, which I keep meaning to report to the discord forum

When a mod needs to edit another users post, the method is to click the three dots of the post, click the pencil icon, edit and save. However, when the pencil icon is clicked, there is a brief moment of lag and then it switches to highlighting the trash can icon. If the pencil icon is selected again, edits can be made but sometimes the trash can icon is still highlighted even though the edit is successful.

Hmm. I edit posts in the new user thread and I have never noticed. But do report it if it happens again. I will also watch for it and see if I can reproduce.

Thanks!

I’m not able to reproduce that. When I click the three dots, I get this right off:

Clicking the pencil icon works right away. Win11 FF.

By the way, many of the bugs in the composer have been fixed. If you are still getting them, please let us know.
