Hi everyone, is it alright if I print the Suttas for my personal use only?
I have no intention of selling or using them commercially in any way.
Apologies in advance if this is an inappropriate question.
Check the copyright notice here: Most of the stuff on SC is free to use for the most part (Bhante Sujato requests you don’t use it to train AI).
I’ve like half the PDF library printed as hardcopies. Most of them riddled with notes. SC Central Commitee still hasn’t taken any legal, paralegal or extralegal action against me…
Please click on the three dot menu on the main site and look for “Licensing”
Then as Dogen said you can check individual translations by clicking on the info icon:
But the short answer is that in most jurisdictions making a copy for yourself of even fully copyrighted material is legal.
Ah, I understand perfectly! You’d like to print them out so you can read them on paper. Yes, that should be absolutely fine for your personal use.
@sujato , if you don’t mind, could you please offer your opinion on this as well?
No need to ask Bhante. He has made it very clear that you are even free to print and sell his translations. Please just read the licensing information. If some wording there leads you to any doubt at all, then you can ask. But it’s really clear on this point.
Oh, sorry, perfect then. Thanks a lot, guys.
Please don’t give me alternative income ideas Bhante.
No problem!!! It’s fine to be cautious.
I’m assuming you know about the print copies available through SuttaCentral. They are not free, but if you need quality printing, they are your best option.
There are also LaTeX versions of his translations, PDF, HTML, etc, etc.
You could start a new thread if you need help with any of those.
I have also made a book builder app that can output the most up to date texts by Bhante Sujato and Brahmali:
And an anthology builder if you just want specific suttas:
They output HTML.
Yes, please go ahead!
