Is this the correct way to fill "elisions"?

I want to fill all elisions, from 281… Is this the correct way? I’m using gemini AI to fill it because i dont understand anything when they use elision, so total is 300 paragraphs instead of 30?

Hi PaddyVu,

Deciphering the elipses is a common conundrum! The good news is that the suttas are self-referencing when it comes to the content replaced by the elipse. In any single division on SuttaCentral – for example, the Aṅguttara division (AN), there is always a first, complete rendering of the content. After that first instance, the elipses replace the exact content.

There are fancier ways of explaining this, but that one should work (I think ).

No need to use AI for this. Simply go back to the first iteration, without elipse. Then you know exactly what the elipses refer to.

It will take some research but that’s how I’m doing it. Hope this helps!

I understand the point about looking at the first paragraph, because the previous ones were the same, but this part is so confusing that I’m asking if writing it out completely like this is correct? I really need to know that. Because it only says 280-309, meaning only 30 paragraphs, but if I use AI and piece it together, there are as many as 300 paragraphs.

Yes! It will significantly increase the volume of the suttas. I’m saying this as someone who has done precisely that – typing it out by hand – in Pali, even, because I’ve been learning the suttas in Pali.

So you are on the right track :+1:… no need for AI to verify this. Just ask your fellow sutta readers, as you’re doing now .

Some people are publishing suttas with the content, not the ellipses. Or developing non-AI software to do it on a screen. I dont know about those efforts. They can help people with a disability who isn’t in a position to type it all out.

Bless you. Thank you so much!
I think Ai is a skillful means to support spiritual practice.

You might reconsider this.

That’s not what I meant. I’m not using AI to translate, but rather to correct errors in existing translations or to write complete articles using abbreviations.
For example, in my country (Vietnam), the available translation written by the professor is like this. At first, I thought it was correct, but when I used AI, I realized it was wrong because I didn’t realize it myself:
Ta không thấy một pháp nào khác, này các Tỷ-kheo, do pháp ấy, các pháp thiện chưa sanh được sanh khởi, và các pháp bất thiện đã sanh được đoạn tận, này các Tỷ-kheo, như tinh tấn tinh cần. Với người tinh cần tinh tấn, này các Tỷ-kheo, các pháp thiện chưa sanh được sanh khởi, và các pháp thiện đã sanh được đoạn tận.
In english is :
“I do not see any other state, O monks, by which unarisen wholesome states arise and arisen unwholesome states are abandoned, like energy and diligence. For one who is diligent and energetic, O monks, unarisen wholesome states arise, and arisen wholesome states are abandoned.”

You see? There’s a mistake
