There has more than one thread on this topic here in the past, e.g. see here. It’s complicated and IMO there’s scope for more than one viewpoint.
As alluded to above, jhana can be a fraught issue. There’s a saying that in polite company it’s best to avoid talk of sex, politics and religion (probably because things can get heated and contentious when conversation heads in that direction). I think there’s a sense in which jhana is the “sex, politics, and religion” of Buddhist discussion! 
IMO there’s a fair bit of fuzziness in the sutta details. There are various camps on most aspects of the topic. Be prepared for strong opinions!
