The recording from today’s class is now available in the usual place, i.e. my google drive (you should all have the URL for this by now).
Now that we have completed all of Lesson 2 from the Gair and Karunatillake, here is a copy of my trilinear translations of the exercises G&K Readings 2 Trilinear.pdf (150.5 KB)
which, I trust, some of you may find helpful. Since I always include the sutta reference for the Pāli excerpts used in the exercises, it’s good to review other translations that you can either find online or in hard-copy.
Homework to complete before the next lesson is:
Read through all grammatical material in Lesson 3 (pp. 33-40)
Study the vocabulary for the first set of readings in Lesson 3 (pp.30-32)
Work through this first set of readings (pp.29-30), trying to understand how the Pāli all fits together and making your own translations.
In our class today I talked about the difference between the two Pāḷi words hiri and ottappa. And I think I may have got them the wrong way round in the class; hiri is more internal, and ottappa external. See this article from Ajahn Pasanno from Abhāyagiri Monastery in California, Hiri and Ottappa | Abhayagiri Monastery. Apologies for any confusion I may have caused.
