Thread for John Kelly’s Pāli Reading Group 2025 Session 4 (March 23rd / 24th 2025).

Meeting ID: 829 5896 1475

Passcode: anicca

You will need to remain in the “waiting room” until host lets you in.

We will continue going through together Dīgha Nikaya 22, Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna sutta.

Homework preparation for this class:

Prepare your answers for the following sections:

  • Review what we have already covered in sections 1, 2, & 3 (Kāyānupassanā, Vedanānupassanā, Cittānupassanā)
  • Prepare your solutions for sections 4.1 through 4.4 (the first four parts of Dhammānupassanā)
  • Since these four sections are quite straightforward with much repetition, then look through sections 4.5 and 4.5.1

Note that MN 10, the Satipaṭṭhāna sutta, stops right after section 4.5 (just mentioning the Truths) before going directly to the concluding paragraphs. However, DN 22, the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna sutta, elaborates in detail on the four truths (sections 4.5.1 → 4.5.4).

Note that this detailed analysis of the truths can be found separately in MN 141 (Saccavibhaṅga). It’s as if the early compilers of the canon did some cutting and pasting such that DN 22 = MN 10 + MN 141, approximately.
