Khuddaka Nikaya, the Short readings 2, The Ten Training Rules

“I undertake the training rule of refraining from unchastity”. The way the wording is phrased it is easy to misread. Perhaps a better word for unchastity would be carnality or some similar word. To refrain from a negative seems awkward in its translation.

No it’s a double negative:
not not chastity = chastity.

Perhaps easier if you read it more like the Pali:
Unchastity, to refrain from, I undertake.

The second precept also has a double negative…

That is helpful. Thanks for the input.

Dear Savaka,

Unchastity is not a very accurate translation for abrahmācariya. I would instead suggest “sexual activity”, which is much more precise in this connection. So perhaps: “I undertake the training rule of refraining from sexual activity.”
