🗂️ Language Decks for Anki

We have several threads for Anki Decks for language studies now — this thread is for bringing them all together for a useful wiki.

As a wiki, anyone can edit this post. So, if you have an Anki deck for the common languages regarding EBT studies (Pāli, Sanskrit, Chinese, Japanese, etc;) feel free to edit the first post and add your own deck.

Pāli

DPD Anki Deck

DPD is now available as an Anki pack, including all 48 000+ words with complete information, marked with a :check_mark: in the dictionary. The words are sorted by frequency in the Sutta and Vinaya texts, so the deck starts with well-known words and grows progressively harder. There will be monthly updates, so you will always have the latest information available to you.

For more information, please refer to this page in the docs.

About Spaced Repetition Systems (SRS)

I made the thread because of the new DPD update, which now includes an Anki deck for the entire DPD! :exploding_head:

But, Bhante @NgXinZhao also have very useful decks, so please Bhante, for the specialized dhp / patimokkha decks, it would be fantastic if you could post your decks here.

This is a wiki. Please click on the edit button on the first post:

And add your decks there.

fwiw, i’m just chiming in as a “used to script kiddie copy-paste” and “trying to learn pali” (like not even 10 chapters into de silva days) I just want to say that on those decks because of the programmatic creation sometimes they give a sense of a word when it’s the other sense that is relevant - like they don’t show a whole root from the dpd (as of 1-2 weeks ago)

also language and protocols are relations and relational - most the IT people [1] are lamenting ai because while they may be formal language enthusiasts the aspect of learning and finding out from each other is why they would drop into irc or give attention and code review

i imagine it’s the same with pali education - I have a friend right now who is in sri lanka and sits face to face as they go through the pali

it’s that attention that is language - it’s relational [3] - the dhamma - generosity - caga - freely open handed - not the kind of knowledge that is to “get” the “in the head” and “reproduce for the exam” the instrumental - the close handed (hannah arendt in 1954 [2] )

most FOSS maintainers well familiar with the kind of code dumps or pull requests from the bots it deffers the attention to the human, they have been through this

For those making these decks and giving them away - wait untill all your bug reports or updates for words and senses are from ai bots then you will understand

a lot of this use of AI defers to human attention - if you see people losing their minds from IT = this (see for instance rob pike - creator of unicode, go lang, a lot of the best unix interfaces that because they were designed for human attention and very kind and brief to it - is also the prefer means the ai agents use [1])

it will be coming to the humanities soon

with metta

even the design of internet prococols are relational and have conduct…

" TCP implementations should follow a general principle of robustness:
be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from
others." - the tcp protocol (a.k.a ‘the internet’) [4]

[1] i can give a lot of examples where this relational is noted by just 2 days from anotehr discourse… On The Merits Of LLMs - Off-Topic - Haiku Community

There is a possibility here that all this results in isolating people from each other, preventing collective organization, if it’s used in this way. I do make a lot of my work available under open source licenses. The only profit I get from that is the occasional “thank you” email, people recognizing my nickname in unexpected places, things made using my software. I see a future where people will not access this information directly, but through an LLM mixing it with other data, and providing better answers, but no human connexions.

there’s lineage and transmission in the IT community too - elders of Rob Pike or Kernighan - bell labs / at&t - they created these tools the agents use -that was not their intent - the reason the agents use them is because they were well designed, terse and kind t ohuman attention - and a procol - a pro social way of structuring communication across walks of life - also essential element of culture - which is why the agents use that tool - strong language warning but this is him on boxing day after openclaw agent emailed him

[2] Hannah Arendt in The Human Condition"the implements and tools of homo faber, from which the experience of instrumentality arises, determine all work and fabrication. For here iti s true the end justifies the means; it does more, it produces and organises them. The ends justifies the violence done to natuere to win the material, as the wood justifies killing the tree and the table justifies destroying the wood. Because of the end prodcut, tools are designed and implements invented, and the same end product organises the work process itself, decides about the needed specialists and the measure of co-operation. During the work process everything is judged in terms of usefulness and suitablity for the derived end." I submit this is not yoniso. And we have a good similie from the sutta work it’s more like AN11.11 on caga freely open handed (eds apologies again this is after having accidentally clicked send on a draft - just trying to connect the context here)

[3] … language is relational … it might seem “just a tool” but protocol design, interface design is very human it had human attention in mind and FOSS is like a gift - caga - now I had mind on this - when interviewing for co-ops - when someone would potentially live with us without us having ability to say when they should leave (and potentially for life) most important indicator was what they noticed in others - did they understand why we were working - what we were doing - and I’m imagining as monastics can see this on alms round - the differeence between awareness of intention of the donor and what it was or its instrumental value etc

I’m so fortunate, so very fortunate.
Among people with hearts full of the stain of stinginess I live at home rid of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.’

An11.11 Now - imagine Oscar Wilde on the word “charity” there - doesnt’ mean “lets give $30 to the poors”- it’s rather solidarity - civic - to give ones life, time and attention

nissaya

the support (the term for the understanding of pali given being the term for the relation of student - teacher)

dhamma vinaya

the form

caga

the condition

satipatthana sutta

how to set an alarm clock without a phone

the original “spaced repetion system” - “aloko udapadi”

[4] sometimes this is intentionally violated too - this community of post plan9 enthusiasts I was following todeay because they seem to be setting up pro social networks .. they knowingly part of the TCP protocol. Or example of my own in 2013 - writing the cryptoparty code of conduct it was required that there was not an authority or check - this was necessary to establish relations where people conducted their own case by case trust checks that were outside of institutional norms - so against every inter-sectional bone in my body and intutions from other codes of conduct, by laws, constitutions been involed in editing or shaping in the communities part of - this one had to say “This is not a safe space” its sole purpose was because it’s often the expression of the high value ‘saftey’ ‘peace’ that allows the entry of the untrusted authority - the reason why was to ensure it was a protcol that is human relations and establishment of trust checking came before any co-opting from powers in the name of certain values… I think it worked out … a consequetial 6 words? I think it was the reason it spread so quickly - gave people persmission and to be in their hands - or to offer it as from them- not ask permission to check their undersanding or knowledge. Bhante just a couple days ago “AI is Knowledge totalitarianism” it’s the claim to being most adept at it - and that being a value - something we value as the “good” - and measuing for the good and trying to promote the good - that is the very condition that allows what chuang tzu calls “the master theif”.

Supermemo is a great program - anki only gets part of it - the designer of that tool piotr - what is his first rule? to understand before trying to know. pretty much everyone violates this. what is the mode of understanding? it’s nissaya (the same word for the teacher student relation is the same word for a corpus text designed to transmit dhamma and for what you have now trained gemini with perhaps unwittingly) - what is the support or condition it’s caga - the open handed relation - the form - dhamma vinaya

This can be a real problem with any SRS deck, even one you custom build yourself. Each card must have an exclusive correct answer, otherwise it needs to be rewritten.
