If I remember correctly, in the sutta I‘m looking for, a dying lay follower talks to one of the Buddha‘s foremost disciples, asking for advanced teachings. The Buddha judges the man as spiritually mature enough to receive the teaching. Before dying, the man pleads with the Buddha to make this kind of knowledge available to a wider lay audience.
