Mapping Taisho multi-line references to segments

It seems that there is a strange little bug regarding references. If the same reference appears on two consecutive segments or paragraphs, the second one is not displayed. Perhaps this is actually intentional to not repeat a reference, but in my Chinese translations, I place references at the beginning of each paragraph and the sutra’s title. The title doesn’t have a reference displayed, which I can understand, but then the first paragraph has no reference either because it’s the same line in the Taisho for the Samyukta Agama.

The end result is this

when the Bilara data for references reads like this

"sa15:0.3": "t99.2.3a6", "sa15:1.1": "t99.2.3a6",

The initial paragraph has no reference.

This happens throughout, whenever there’s a repeat of a reference. It’s usually not that much of an issue. If it’s intention to skip repeat references, then I could change my data files to not list references on the title segments.

Others probably know better, but I think having the same reference in two places is not a good policy data wise. And if the refs are page anchors in the html, then it breaks the validation.

How do the the PTS page refs handle it? Because technically the start of the page would be before sutta titles (in the MN and DN at least) therefore the ref should attach to the title. But I don’t think we do it that way. The page ref always attaches to the first text segment. I’d suggest handling it the same way.

(That’s off the top of my head)

I’d also think this is the way it should be done. I don’t know for sure with respects to references, but for comments, I know that they should not be set in title segments of any sort (including subtitles within longer suttas). I assume for references it’s probably the same.

The reason is that in a printed edition, it would be really bad to have a comment (or a reference) attached to a title; and the Bilara texts do all have the option to be included into the “editions” program for printing.

For duplication of references, though, I don’t know.

Oh, that’s true. Anchor labels do need to be unique. That makes sense.

Yes, I see that now. I’ll remove the refs from titles. The issue with the same ref being at the start of two paragraphs happens because Taisho refs go down to the line number, so two short paragraphs (usually part of a conversation) can be start on the same line. Probably not something that would happen with other references. I’ll adjust my data and call it good.
