Buddhas of Bamiyan
The Buddhas of Bamiyan (Pashto: د باميانو بودايي پژۍ, Dari: تندیسهای بودا در بامیان) were two monumental Buddhist reliefs in the Bamiyan Valley of Afghanistan, carved possibly around the 6th-century.[3] Located 130 kilometres (81 mi) to the northwest of Kabul, at an elevation of 2,500 metres (8,200 ft), carbon dating of the structural components of the Buddhas has determined the smaller 38 m (125 ft) “Eastern Buddha” was built around 570 CE, and the larger 55 m (180 ft) “Western Buddha” was built around 618 CE, which would date both to the time when the Hephthalites ruled the region.[2][4][5]

I had the good fortune to travel in Afghanistan in 1970 during a rare period of peace in that country. Here are thee images I took onto colour slides with a Kodak Instamatic camera. We climbed up staircases hollowed out inside the cliff from the ground up to a gallery behind the Buddha’s head. It was a long climb, during which we passed a lot of small caves (the holes in the rock face in the pictures) which were monks’ meditation cells.
So the first photo would have been taken from the main street. The arched photo of green fields was taken after the climb from behind/beside the Buddha’s head, looking over the Bamiyan township, and the paintings were the remains of frescos that would have once covered the whole of the wall and ceiling around his head.

WOW! Youwill likely be the first and only person I’ll have met wthat actually went into the Buddha caves!

Yes… that’s good fortune…
I also thought it was just one giant image…
And I thought it was just a few caves where people meditated, but there are many.
