Ne36: The Plotting of Directions, Guidelines, Mettā, Karuṇā, Muditā, Upekkhā

Recently I found and read sutta Ne36 .

In this sutta there is a set of 40 factors that deal with Mettā, Karuṇā, Muditā, Upekkhā and another set of 40 factors that deal with defilements. Below are two tables that present these.

* bhavādhiṭṭhānaṁ is mentioned once in place of cāgādhiṭṭhānaṁ which is mentioned many times

Now defilements are demonstrable through the four perversions. Where are they to be found? In the conglomeration of defilement with its ten grounds. What ten grounds?

Thanks for sharing this. I read only the first few paragraphs, but it was enough to add the Nettipakaraṇa to my “to-read at some point” list.

  1. Creatures with ignorance for their hindrance and fettered [by craving] to ignorance, explore on the side of ignorance. They are called “of view-temperament”. Creatures with craving as their fetter and fettered to craving, explore on the side of craving. They are called “of craving-temperament”.

An interesting lens. I definitely see both these tendencies in myself.
