Offering a spanish translation of Sn 2,3 - Hirisutta

Hello all!

Yesterday I was hosting a Sutta study group in spanish and we were diving into the topic of friendship. Browsing through the index, I saw Sn 2,3 linked, though it didn’t have a Spanish translation. I made a live translation on the call from english, and today I made a more thoughtful one, which I leave here.

Desobedeciendo la conciencia, despreciándola,

diciendo “Estoy de tu lado”,

pero no actuando en coherencia

sabes que no está de tu lado.

Algunos dicen cosas lindas a sus amigos

sin actuar en coherencia.

El sabio reconocerá

a quien habla sin hacer.

Ningún amigo verdadero sospecha intensamente

la traición, buscando la falta.

Aquel en quien descansas, como un niño sobre el

pecho,

es un verdadero amigo, que no se aparta de ti por

otros.

Aquel cuya recompensa es el fruto

de soportar la carga del servicio

desarrolla un estado feliz,

produciendo alegría y atrayendo elogio.

Aquel que ha bebido del néctar de

la seclusión

y del néctar de la paz,

libre de estrés, libre de maldad,

bebe del néctar alegre del Dhamma.

I did that based on Bhante Sujato’s translation.

I would love to check back on the Pali, though I don’t know if I’ll have the time, and I figured it would be good to have a Spanish translation (even if it’s secondhand) online for others to read.

Amigos hispanohablantes: ¿será bueno dejar esta traducción en SC? ¿O será antes necesario pasarla por revisión de alguien que sepa Pali? Creo que es beneficioso dejar una traducción de este texto en línea, así sea de segunda mano. ¿Qué piensan al respecto?

Is there a protocol to follow in order to add translations to SC? Is it needed for the translation to be direct from the Pali? After reading carefully to the guidelines and other posts here, I figured posting it here is the way to go. However, I am open to receive guidance on this front; also considering that I might enjoy translating other texts (I have the hypothesis that Sn is lowly translated into Spanish).

Seems to me like a decent translation. Maybe slightly too literal, but, accurate. I would only change the line:

sabes que no está de tu lado.

for one that uses the plural: sabes que no están de tu lado (ellos, los que desobedecen la conciencia)

While it’s really nice to post that here, and you even got some feedback already, the official way for adding new translations is via our translation software Bilara. One thing you need in order to check it out is a user account on GutHub. In order to contribute translations, a project needs to be set up for you in Bilara.

Before a project can be set up, Bhante @sujato would have to agree with your plans. For this purpose you may describe a bit more about the project you are planning, like:

• What would be the scope of your project? The entire canon? One particular collection?
• What would be your translation process?
• What sort of translation are you thinking of? Literal rendering of the Pali? Accessible translation for easy reading?
• Do you have any experience with translating, or writing in general?

You should also note a few things:

• It is perfectly okay to use existing Bilara translations, especially Bhante Sujato’s, as a basis for your work.
• A translation where AI is included in the process in whatever way will not be accepted for SuttaCentral.
• You have to accept CC0 copyright for Bilara translations.
• You can also find more information on Bilara translations here.

I hope this is of some help. I would be pleased to see new Spanish translations, although I don’t understand that language.

That seems to be true: there are exactly 2 Spanish translations in the Suttanipata on SuttaCentral:

(You can see this when you set the website language to Spanish.)

You might also wish to get into contact with @Bernat who is doing Spanish translations for SuttaCentral.

La traducción está bien, aunque siempre tiene inconvenientes hacer el triángulo de traducir de una traducción, ya que yendo al original se pueden encontrar alternativas que quizás encajen mejor en español.

He echado un vistazo al pali y no es fácil, que es muy habitual en verso. La cuarta línea no tiene por qué estar en plural, aunque Sujato lo haya traducido así, pero el pali no lo marca. Se podría traducir: sabes que ése no está de tu parte, o sabes “Este no es de los míos” en diálogo directo como en el pali. Hay muchas otras cositas que podrían ser distintas y más claras, pero tampoco lo he mirado detenidamente. Realmente no es un texto fácil.

Lo más importante seguramente es la dificultad de traducir hiri al español, ya que “consciencia” suena a viññāṇa, y el español no hace la distinción que queda tan clara en inglés entre ‘consciousness’ y ‘conscience’, con su connotación moral. Habría que especificar “consciencia moral” o “compás moral”. También se podría hacer uso del significado más literal de ‘vergüenza’ que en español se usa mucho: ser un sinvergüenza, la idea de que esa persona no tiene vergüenza alguna y te dice que está de tu parte cuando no lo está.
