Oldest source for color interpretations in the Buddhist Flag

Namaste… :anjal:

As we all know, every colors in Buddhist flag has it’s own meaning. Like ‘blue’ which represents ‘spirit of universal compassion’, ‘yellow’ symbolized ‘the middle path’, and so on. I just realized that this interpretations doesn’t exist in 1950, when this flag is acknowledged as international Buddhist Flag. I wanna know the oldest source about this interpretation, I think it came from a book before the internet era, but I can’t found it. Does anyone know about that? Many thanks before.

But presumably after the time of Col. Olcott, the most zealous of the early promoters of the flag, who doesn’t seem to have gone for a symbolic interpretation of the colours. See pp. 98-101 of his Buddhist Catechism.

Yes, he don’t do interpretation for the colors

My understanding is that the colors originated simply as the colors of sunrise: blue, white, and a spectrum from yellow to red.

The story goes that these were the lights that emanated from the Buddha when he was awakened, which of course occurred at dawn. But I’m afraid I can’t answer your actual question!

Namaste Bhante, yes, you’re right. I have read your explanation about the sun in another thread. It’s so amazing that you could connect the context with Vedic texts…

That’s fine, thanks for your answer… :anjal:
