I’m planning to start a Pali sutta reading group for those who have done some Pali language study and wish to dive in and begin reading Pali texts.
As mentioned in a previous post, this is not a Dhamma discussion group but rather will focus on vocabulary, grammar, and syntax.
I’m based in the US East Coast (New York) time zone and propose a weekly Monday 12-1pm Zoom. Happy to start as soon as next week, 2024-12-09T17:00:00Z.
Message me here if interested and available, it’s no cost; I’m happy to forward you the texts we’ll look at.
Hi Stephen,
I hope you don’t mind, I edited your post to include a magic timezone friendly time.
I really wish I could join, but that is 3am here in Sydney.
I hope the group goes well and that there might be another opportunity at a more Australia friendly time.
If you could change to 1pm (or even 12pm) New York time, it would be 5 am (4am) my time, and I can join. Like Ven @Pasanna, I live on the east coast of Australia and would love very much to join your group.
I’m planning to modify the language of the existing Thai translation to make the language a bit more ‘reader-friendly’. I will also check the contents against Bhante Sujato’s and Bhikkhu Bodhi’s versions. So, I really wish to attend your class…
Thanks for your interest in this class, especially as it would occur for you at a rather extreme morning hour.
It’s hard to find a time that would work for everyone, and it’s not sure how much interest there would be for something like this on a regular basis. So far there are very few takers.
Perhaps starting one hour later would work (I need to stop at 1pm my time), but that would put the class at the ‘ungodly’ hour of 4am for you. Is it possible to think of Pali grammar at that time? (I once briefly joined an online Kaccāyana class in the middle of the night that I seem to remember was given in Myanmar, um…)
Anyway, would Monday at 12pm New York time, 6pm Euro time, and 4am Australia time be better for everyone? Or a deal breaker?
Thanks Stephen for being flexible.
I know I can’t Pali before 6am.
I can’t even have conversations with my siblings at that time! Hopefully Dheerayupa can join.
I believe I can. I often get awoken by my master (cat) at around 5.30 to open the door for him to go out to do his toilet business. I think I can manage 4am. But I need to ask for your forgiveness if I look like a zombie!
I’ve emailed materials to those who have expressed interest in our group starting on Monday, 12pm-1pm, US Eastern, New York time. (This is one hour later than initially stated.)
If anyone else would like to join, you are most welcome.
Stephen
Hi Stephen, I’d like to be added if it’s still possible? However, if there’s homework to complete by Monday, I wouldn’t be able to prepare just this time.
Hi. I have sent u a message. May I be considered for the pali language sutta study MN2. I am not new in this app but I don’t know how to use it effectively. I hope that I will get a notification and a link at 1 am. My time would be Tuesday 10 Dec from 1-2 am. I know the time is ‘ungodly’ so I will not turn on the video. May I still follow? If not, may u consider me when u have a suitable time for people in Asia. Thank u.
