Remembering Venerable Akiñcanā

I only learned it much later: It’s almost four months now that Venerable Akiñcanā passed away. She was a user of this forum known as @akincana, although she didn’t post much.

She deserves to be commemorated for her contributions to the spread of Vipassana meditation, to Pali studies, and to Bhikkhuni ordination.

Born in Germany, she got in touch with Buddhism in Myanmar as a teenager, and later ordained as a Sāmaṇerī. There is this memorial article for her on Insight Myanmar.

I have met her in person once and got to know a very humble and hospitable person.

In the last phase of her life she was assisted and looked after by Anagarika Sunya @greenTara and @Kykiliee—thank you both for this great Dhamma service!

May Venerable Akiñcanā swiftly attain the highest peace!

Yes, Joah mentioned to me he has 40 hours of interviews with her. Unfortunately they didn’t get to her scientific work on Pali studies before she passed away.

Thanks for posting!

Thank you so much. I’m so sorry I didn’t know more about her when she was alive.
