I’ve found an interesting sutra in EA 48.6, mostly mirroring Ud 4.4 but also AN 11.9, and edit: Thanks to Bhante @Snowbird pointing out the rest of the sutra containing some account from MN50.
In the Chinese version, instead of the discussion happening between Sariputta & Moggallāna, it happens between Sariputra & Buddha.
The earlier discussion between the two spirits seem rather livelier, with lengthier elaboration and graphic descriptions. Buddha, after meeting Sariputra, tells the monks that it’s thanks to 金剛三昧 - Diamond Concentration that Sariputra was able to withstand such a powerful rebuke.
Unlike the Pāli parallel, Buddha goes into a story of another past Buddha and his chief disciples. The disciple chief in psychic powers was once in such a deep meditation in Diamond Concentration, the villagers thought he was dead and decided to set him on funeral pyre. The next day the disciple goes back to begging for alms like nothing’s happened.
It ends with Buddha quoting brahmas, who say they don’t understand the basis of Sariputra’s concentration, mirroring the AN 11.9 recount.
It’s such an interesting mix-mash of two suttas, and yet also original material it seems (I’ve never heard of the story of a monk shaking of being burned alive!).
