This question may put me out on some thin ice, but is the situation untenable because you need two incomes? Then the cost of education comes on top of that?
Not being geographically near a school with a program you want may be the toughest hurdle, as there are assistantships, fellowships, and the like, but they require the student to be on campus.

My question regarding income was too personal and I don’t expect @DKervick to respond, but I also don’t want to delete the whole thing since it’s been up for a little bit.
