SuttaCentral Voice v1.0.0 Released šŸ˜

Just tested it, and the gap seems to be indeed shorter that way.

I would also guess that plays a role.

@karl_lew is this whatā€™s happening here? Is there anyway to adjust for it? One point Iā€™d be inclined to be quite cautious about is reducing the gap too much. To my mind it is way preferable to err on the side of a slightly too long rather than too short pause.

Fully agree!

The new download functions are can be used to aggregating short suttas for collective memorization. For example, one could download a ā€œhalf-hour blockā€ of AN suttas. Aminah might try to download a ā€œjoyā€ playlist, but there is perhaps too much joy in the suttas, so she would probably limit the number of suttas returned. Iā€™m using downloads as an aid to memorization when meditating, so Iā€™ll have downloads for specific daily activities. For a lay person, an ā€œearthā€ playlist could be heard while gardening. Etc.

  1. This is an AMAZING AMAZING use. Thank you for sharing! Sadhu. Sadhu. Sadhu!
  2. Try increasing the browser font size. It is usually in Settings. With Chrome, I use CTRL-PLUS

DN2 is very long. It will fail several times before downloading. This is a known bug that will take time to fix. SCV is slowly piecing together all the words of the sutta and the browser times out after one minute. The only solution is to keep trying. I tried downloading DN2 two more times and it now works. This is quite amazing. I thought DN33 was long at 2 hours (just English). Your DN2 download is four hours long with Pali/English! Wow!

Just click the play icon to get the text window. Downloaded MP3ā€™s are designed for walking meditation without the internet. I load my downloads onto Dropbox for walking meditation.

:see_no_evil: I never turn my computer off. I will fix. :white_check_mark: Thank you!

This might be a problem with the speed of light. The server is in California. It may also be a problem with the ā€œsound cacheā€. Sounds that are in the sound cache are faster than the sounds not yet in the sound cache. With all the sutta exploration happening, the brave explorers will experience the most slowness. Upon listening twice, the second experience should be faster (unless youā€™re half a planet away from California). We can solve this by hosting a computer nearer to your side of the planet or by pre-requesting the following text segment. Aminah, letā€™s put the ā€œpre-fetch voiced segments to reduce internet latency effectsā€ on the release plan.

Also, downloading is not required to play a sutta. If you do both at the same time it will be slow because your internet provider has to work twice as hard.

Ahhh. OK. The bell is just a sound I got off the Internet. Find a good bell sound for us and we can put your bell sound in! (public domain please)

Whatā€™s happening is youā€™re waiting for the internet. It is request latency. The solution is to pre-fetch. I was lazy and did not do pre-fetch. It is fixable.

Thank you all for the amazing feedback! I should go to sleep more.

:joy:

I was already wondering if this might be the solutionā€¦

:flushed: erm. or I should turn mine off to save the planet.

Alternatively, if you send me the link to the bell in question, I can just add a fade to it, so the cut off isnā€™t so abrupt.

As an admin, I think (?) you might be able to change the files directly in github:

And if folks have ideas for sounds, just send them to Aminah!
Weā€™ll probably need to limit them because of UI clutter, but let Aminah know. Sheā€™s in charge.

Oh maaaaan, another repo!!! :sob: (:giggling:)

by which you must mean just add a link here.

Well thatā€™s one we can continue debating another time

And either one of us will also need to change the linking Javascript file.

Yes, I couldnā€™t do this through git (I missed the github point of your message), but was just now able to add directly.

Fix confirmed. Thank you! :white_check_mark:

Folks, please note that Aminah has just fixed her first bug.

 :joy: hmmmā€¦ I guess Iā€™ve now established myself as a crucial part of the engineer team. :joy:

I can brand myself as a niche specialist, there is no fade too big or small for me to add :ninja_icon:

Hmm. I turned my computer off. And when I turned my computer onā€¦the SCV cookie settings worked just fine. I cannot reproduce the disappearing cookies. :see_no_evil:

Iā€™ll need some help here. I am using Chrome on a Chromebook. What are you all using for browsers with disappearing SCV settings?

My primary browser is FF, but I set it for both Chrome and FF last night.

Iā€™ll do a re-boot now. One moment.

Huh - I didnā€™t even need to get that far, I just figured I double check all settings were set to something other than the default on both browsers before rebooting. I set for Chrome, then for good measure hit the Home button and the defaults were re-implemented.

I will still re-set my defaults and re-boot, but just to let you know.

And also, as you might have seen on the RP clicking on the examples button also resets preferences.

I just did that and my Chrome doesnā€™t lose settings. :see_no_evil:

However by design, hitting Home clears all the settings.

That one will need a bit of explaining to me, because I think thereā€™s a bit of a flaw here if a userā€™s selected to keep settings they get wiped out by hitting the home button.

Iā€™ll retest with the examples.

 Quite right!

Please specify how settings should be cleared to default. Perhaps a button Clear in Settings?
