The point is that each of these UI items has a clearly defined role. Switches are for on/off selection, radio buttons for choosing between a number of options, and so on.
The nice thing about using MD is that the use cases for all of these things have been carefully considered by top experts in the field, and implemented in a very consistent and clear way, and, as with all things Google, backed up by massive data on actual usage. That makes our job much easier: we don’t have to second-guess things all the time.

Well, Windows is >90% of desktop OS but that does not make it user friendly or logically consistent.
