The Snp as a libretto

the anthology of discourses as a libretto

this is proven to be a really sunny day for me because I got my anthology of discourses in the mail today. in the preface Bhante Sujato introduces the collection by claiming they were composed in a meter “halfway between traditional and Buddhist Innovations” a claim to which he added the comment that they “were suited to musical accompaniment”.

Musical accompaniment? tell me there is a somewhere a recorded presentation of some of this collection with musical notation and instruments you have some confidence in.

This topic was recently exploring araga music in theravada tradition:

Okay. Both raga and chant share their story. The oldest music I have on LP is Sounds from Silence, a Hurran Hymn to the Moon God made possible because they found cuniform tablets …

" 2014, scholars from the University of California at Berkeley brought to life the ancient sounds of Mesopotamia following the decryption and study of a set of ancient cuneiform texts that date back 3,400 years, according to a report on WFMU. The result is the recreation of a piece of music unheard for thousands of years, and the CD titled ‘Sounds from Silence’ is now available to the public".

A brief aside: Which anthology uses Bhante’s introduction? :folded_hands:

I think it’s that Suttanipāta is translated as “Anthology of Discourses”:
