Translation of parinibbāyati

Hi there,

“When he does not cling, he is not agitated. When he is not agitated, he personally attains Nibbana”. (Anupādiyaṁ na paritassati, aparitassaṁ paccattaññeva parinibbāyati).

This fragment is quit common in the sutta’s.

I know nothing of the Pali language. Busy with my series of post on parinibbana i see different wordings. I wonder, why is parinibbāyati not translated as…attaining parinibbana but as attaining of Nibbana? Just seeing at the word, it seems to deal parinibbana?

The verb ‘parinibbāyati’ means to fully ‘reach complete extinction of existence’ according to PED.
One who attains parinibbāna is a ‘parinibbāyin’.

So perhaps literally it’s ‘he personally nibbanizes’.

On an English grammar note, the plural of sutta is ‘suttas’. The apostrophe s form is possessive, not plural.

PED is a dictionary?

That complete extinction of existence can be attained in this very life?

Why not …he personally parinibbanizes?

Yes, PED stands for Pali English Dictionary.

I think yes to your other 2 questions.
