UNESCO grants World Heritage status to Sarnath where Buddha gave his first sermon

Sarnath, where Mahatma Buddha delivered his first sermon and established the first Buddhist Sangha, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List after 28 years on the tentative list

Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List

Announced at the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee, it is now India’s 45th World Heritage Site
