Update "Acknowledgements" Page

The “Acknowledgements” page on the main site (bilara-data source) seems to have not received much update in many years.

I’ve been involved for less than a year, so I don’t know all that is missing, but as far as I could tell, Bilara v1 and v2 are missing (and the Editions project?), various forum moderators and admins are missing, other newer volunteers are missing, and even HongDa is missing. There are some old names there as well that should be updated.

I could add a bit that I know, but I feel there are folks more qualified than me to give a more comprehensive update.

This is a bit of a stretch, but I might also suggest linking to people’s work (where possible and if desired), such as translations, PRs, forum activity, etc. Also possibly having year ranges for ‘years of service’

I think it would be better to have major and minor acknowledgement pages. Major for the big pieces of the site and founders. That could be on the site itself (i.e. the current page) and then for everything else link to a markdown file hosted on github. That way acknowledging people would not be so dificult aka ignored. Anyone could, with a few clicks edit and add to the file.

As it is now, segments have to be created, it’s localized, etc. Just very complicated for information that is so dynamic.

If the work has been done while they were lay people, the names are left as such.

Are you sure that is a policy and not just neglect? It might very well be, I don’t know.

Yes. Once I wanted to update such names, and Bhante told me not to. It’s also the reason why my own name is noted as “Sabbamitta”, because I started my project as Anagarika and now am a Silashin, so it wasn’t clear which title to apply.

Yes this is one half of what I meant by “old names”; I spotted dead names as well.

There are fallbacks for localization, and names generally shouldn’t be localized, so I don’t think that is too much of an issue.
But the segments are numbered and localized according to those, so that would be problematic if it wasn’t just lines added to the end (e.g. if it were further categorized or alphabetized)

However y’all think would be best, I’m happy with. Don’t worry too much about what was done in the past. The main thing is it should be easy to maintain and update.

One thing to think of. In New Bilara, superusers and administrators can add new segments using the “split” function. So if this were added to Bilara, it could be updated by someone with appropriate rights. Not saying it should be done this way, just that it could be.

To get around this, if we keep this page localized, I would suggest not using numbers for names, and instead using a named key, like in interface translations

Manual PRs to bilara-data could add segments too. Although I think the new requirement of empty strings for every untranslated segment might confuse Bilara v2 if the segments were only added to the root in a manual PR and not all translations simultaneously. I had the same concern with adding missing interface roots manually too
