Uposatha and Illness

When your ill and you train in observing the uposatha (as a layperson), do you think making exceptions to certain rules is allowable or should one strive to observe the full uposatha nonetheless? Do the Suttas say something about that?

If the action goes along with morality (i.e. using a non-vegetarian treatment while given no other option by the doctor) to cure an ailment, then it is quite reasonably okay. The Dalai Lama asked for a non-vegetarian menu at the White House because after a long time being a vegetarian the Dalai Lama developed an ailment, and His personal Doctor prescribed for Him to eat meat sometimes. The Dalai Lama follows a set of Tibetan monastic rules that have parallels in the Theravada Vinaya.
