Vinaya Doodles šŸ˜

Yes, at least 5 yojanas (about 50miles/80km).
The early sangha were homeless wanderersā€¦ You shouldnā€™t get too cozy in one place.

So bhikkhus can throw popcorn at one another?

Only if laypeople offer it firstā€¦

Would they have to cut it first. :corn:

 noā€¦ The skin already ruptures when the corn pops. So cutting wonā€™t do anything anymore

Whoa! Wait! Doesnā€™t this contradict the Vinaya rule on offering food found on the road to someone who would offer it back to eat it? I recall something about travelling monks who found fallen fruit and had to offer it to others, only being able to eat it when offered back.

I think you are refering to this rule from the khandhakas?

ā€œI allow you, monks, if one anywhere sees solid food that is fruit, but if there is no one to make it allowable, having taken it oneself, having carried it away, having seen someone to make it allowable, having laid it down on the ground, to make use of it, (he) having (formally) offered it to you. I allow you, monks, to receive (formally) what you have picked up.ā€ Kd 6.17.9

It applies only to fruits, and the monastics have to lay the fruits on the ground. They donā€™t give it to laypeople directly.

Ah! Thank you for clarifying. Now it makes sense.

Your doodle for 41 is such a beautiful rendition of my own temple, Wat Yan, with its galleries, lotus ponds, amusement parks, and gardens!

Now I understand why they donā€™t allow Bhikkhunis to ordain here!

They seriously have this at the monastery?

swing

 :joy:
Did one of the laypeople donate it?

I didnā€™t know they had picture galleries! (P41)

:joy: No no. We donā€™t literally have a whirly chair thingā€¦ yetā€¦

 If anyone wants to donate to this effort, I think our Mondop Staircase would make an epic waterslide:

Discussing further Bhi.Pac 46, the rule is to not personally hand out food, rather than prohibiting generally providing it, say, by setting it near a person or asking another to give. So I think naming the rule ā€œHanding foodā€¦ā€ would be more accurate than ā€œGiving foodā€¦ā€
Thanks!

Awesome drawing and interpretations, as always.

Iā€™m particularly tickled by the pizza being accepted after regular food was declined in Bhi Pac 54 - because thatā€™s exactly when itā€™s hardest to keep this rule!

Thanks for the interpretive description and drawing of Bhi Pac 55, ā€œKeeping good supporters to oneselfā€; the usual translations of being ā€œBegrudgingā€ or ā€œStingy with regard to familiesā€ donā€™t get the point across nearly so clearly.
