What are the Hearers?

Dear friends, I wish you all liberation from suffering, and a happy 2017. I was going to say ‘prosperous’ but thought twice about it…lol

So I found this passage
"Even in the case of the statement that a transgression of the Hearers’ vows cannot be restored, if there is regret and an awareness of the intention not to repeat it, and an awareness of the lack of a true identity of the mind that performed the action, or familiarity with the lack of a true identity of all phenomena, that person’s morality can be said to be pure. This should be understood from the Sūtra on the Elimination of Ajātaśatru’s Regret (Ajātaśatrukaukṛttyavinodana- sūtra). You should overcome your regret and make special effort in meditation (bhāvanā).’

From here:‘Kamalashila’s "Middling Stages of Meditation’ which I found here:

I am happy to be learning so much about the Middling Stages, but can someone explain about ’ a transgression of the Hearers’ vows’? May you be happy Now!

I imagine that a Hearer refers to a sāvaka.
