What are your thoughts on Maurice Walshe’s translation of the Dīgha Nikāya (printed version published by Wisdom Publications)?

Does Bhikkhu Bodhi have plans to translate and publish a new/updated version (with Wisdom Publications)?

That it was the only one I could get my hands on, back in the day, and that I only ever reference the first third of it.

Readable, but not reliable. In many cases it seems to be a modernization of the earlier Rhys Davids translation. But where Walshe makes changes, he often introduces new mistakes rather than correcting Rhys Davids’.

I discussed some specific instances here:

Many, I think, have encouraged him to do this (including me!), but I haven’t heard any indication that he is interested.

Thank you, Bhante. That’s exactly what I needed.

I searched for “Digha Nikaya” (wihout the diacritics) before posting, but your thread didn’t come up due to the title having diacritics (although correctly). I’ll make sure to search for both next time.

Ah, that is good. Maybe it is in the works.
