I think a meditator should stay with Sutta instructions.
He may look for other traditions for clarification of Sutta recommendations.

I agree. “Depends on the person” would be the option I’d pick, if it was there.

Ajahn Brahm has some books that might be a good start:

Ajahn Brahm’s "Basic Method of Meditation"
Ajahn Brahm’s “Mindfulness Bliss & Beyond” [Ch. 1-4]
(please consider buying these if you find them useful and have the means)

Understanding though, as Venerable Vimala has said, that there are many methods that may suit different personalities.
