There is a distinction between assutava puthujjana and sutava ariyasavako. I wonder who belongs to the latter category?
And specifically, I want to know if sotapannas are considered to be learned noble disciples. Thanks.
Hi, the answer to your question is provided in SN 22.126 thru SN 22.135
It seems that sutava ariyasavako indeed implies sotapanna. Iām asking about it since SN36.6 says that sutava ariyasavako āis detached from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress; who is detached from sufferingā. So if sotapanna belongs to sutava ariyasavako, then it sets a high bar for being a sotapanna.
SN 22.109 and SN 22.110 reference sotapanna as truly understanding the 5A and arhat as freed by not grasping the 5A. SN 22.113 describes ignorance and an ignorant person, and SN 22.114 knowledge and a knowledgeable person. SN 22.117 describes a assutavÄ puthujjano ā¦ and ariyasÄvako ā¦
It may be worth your while to look into those suttas from about SN 22.100 down to oh SN 22.157 or so.
